Venice’s St. Mark’s Square under water as newly installed dam fails to activate

Venice’s St. Mark’s Square was flooded after a newly-installed complex system of dams failed to close as the system erroneously predicted a tide rise of only 1.2 (3.9 feet) meters whereas it reached 1.37 meters (4.5 feet). The square is the city’s lowest area at about one meter above sea level. Many residents panicked, some of whom took to social media to express their anxiety.

Foolish idea to build a city in a swamp. I'm amazed it's lasted this long.
