US Oct. job openings blip up to 6.7 million but hiring slows

Job openings in the US rose slightly in October, but layoffs rose even faster, and hiring slipped as a resurgence of COVID-19 threatens the economic recovery. The number of job openings edged up to 6.65M from 6.49M in Sept. About 5.8M people were hired in Oct. But employers hired 5.81M workers, which is less than the 5.89M hires in Sept. Companies laid off 1.68M workers, up from 1.44M in Sept.
