UK plans to fine or block social media if they fail to curb harmful content

Social media and other tech companies will face heavy fines in the UK if they fail to remove or curb harmful material, like content on child sex abuse or terror, and protect users on their platforms. The fines would be up to £18m ($24m) or 10% of the company’s annual global turnover, whichever is higher. The government plans to table the Online Safety Bill in Parliament in 2021 to make this a law.
