I always find it odd when adherents of any religion that claims an all-powerful god are against cremation. If you believe that your god is so pathetic that it needs you to have a physical body rotting in the ground to use its power on it, then you are wasting your time worshipping that god. As a Christian, when other Christians say that you can’t be cremated, because God won’t be able to resurrect you in the last days, it becomes obvious who doesn’t actually understand the Bible or believe in God. The same God who fashioned a man from dirt and breathed life into him, and who made a valley full of desiccated bones come to life and form a mighty army doesn’t need you to have a decomposing corpse.

There is a multitude of various flavors of Islam in Sri Lanka. My guess would be that the outrage is from the recently established Salafist group. For some reason, the sources say nothing about it.
