On this day (December 20) in 1989, the United States initiated Operation Just Cause in a bid to topple the government of Gen. Manuel Noriega in Panama. The year 1790 saw the first successful cotton mill in the US opening up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was completed as ownership of the territory was formally transferred from to the United States from France.
