Libertarian congressman introduces new bill to abolish civil forfeiture

Rep. Justin Amash (L-Michigan), US’s sole Libertarian congressman, tabled a bill that would ban the federal government from using civil forfeiture, which allows law enforcement to take valuable assets from people never charged with a crime. Amash said ’denying people their procedural rights is inherently flawed.’ The government collected $45.7 billion in revenue since 2000 from civil forfeitures.

This is a crime. They use this tactic to ruin people they dont have enough/any evidence on. Even deadfaced criminals deserve their day in court and should be charged with crimes that the evidence shows.

Civil forfeiture is just institutionalized theft. It would be a good day if enough politicians showed the backbone to actually abolish it.

This is a terrible practice and Congresspeople of all stripes should be working to end it. I think its persistence is due to power and influence of police, some departments benefit greatly from the practice. Also, city governments like the revenue it produces and don't want to cut services or raise taxes as they'd need to if the stopped.

Did not even know that such a draconian and (should be) unconstitutional law existed. Should have been repealed long ago together with much of (un)Patriot act.

I agree with doing away with civil forfeiture. On another note of the five articles that show on my screen only one related to the headline. The picture of the bear does not relate to the headline either. ????

Its nice to see someone in Congress without and an R or D next to their name who isn't essentially an R or D.

Civil Asset Forfeiture violates due process. You are taking the property of a person before they have gone through the legislative system or even looked at a judge. It flagrantly violates a person’s rights. It deserves to be abolished.

Too bad that’s not a picture of Justin Amash. But yes, this forfeiture is handled wrong and needs to be correctly. He’s always been an excellent representative and I would have been happy to vote for him to congress again.

Round of applause for Michigan being the only state with a district that has a brain.

It's about time we stopped putting other people's money into cops hands. It's bad enough they get away with such bad behavior as they have been lately, but this was LEGAL robbery. Our politicians do not have our best interests at heart, and this proves it.

I’m a progressive, but this is totally something that needs to get passed, no matter what party you are in. Civil forfeiture is a crime and it needs to be abolished.

It should never have been allowed in the first place. It's blatantly unconstitutional and has been one of the most heavily abused policies in law enforcement history!

This is why we need third parties. I know this bill will never pass, but I'm happy to see it brought up.

I have great respect for Amash despite not always agreeing with his politics. When duty called, he had the moral conviction to stand against party and jeopardize his political career in favor of protecting the country.

Yeah good luck. Especially with Democrats gaining the presidency, you can bet they’re only going to allow more government control
