Piracy and controversial copyright laws tucked inside COVID relief bill

The $2.3 trillion spending bill just passed by Congress which includes $900 billion of coronavirus relief also contains a new law that will punish piracy services that stream large amounts of copyrighted content. This new law, along with two other laws dealing with copyright and trademark, are awaiting President Donald Trump’s signature.

Whether you’re liberal or conservative or centrist or progressive or libertarian or whatever else you may be, this Covid bill is a huge sham. It’s just a piece of garbage bill that give millions to the corporations and the government, but essentially just throws lollipops to the Americans that are struggling the most. It’s downright shameful.

Police reform starts with the laws. If you don’t want prisons overcrowded with nonviolent offenders then you don’t write laws like this.

This is why we need to make "riders", or provisions that could not pass on their own, illegal. The bill is supposed to be about COVID relief. It should be about that. And that ONLY.

The bill proposed had 5 500 pages. It wasn't a normal bill. And they only gave representatives a few hours to read it before voting. Classical swamp mentality. There will be so mutch .... Trump should disallow for that reason Create a simple bill that just gives money to citizens But corrupt Democrats will always rewards their corporate master's

These aren't in the Covid bill. The Covid bill is in the budget bill. These other things are also in the budget bill.

I am surprised. I had expected the people on this app, which are normally heartless, to cheer the fact that poor people will be thrown in jail for streaming unauthorized content... why can’t you guys be reasonable on everything else?

They are misrepresenting what is actually happening. The covid relief bill is a small section of a significantly larger bill for the governmental budget... please look further into this than the media is saying. Including your media.

Somewhere in those 5000 pages there must a few million earmarked to build a bridge to nowhere.

Poison pill legislation is one of the biggest reasons our law making process is so dysfunctional. Earmarking Bills and tying unrelated legislation to proposed laws lead to stalling and gridlock. Not to mention, copyright laws should have nothing to do covid relief. This kind of lawmaking is toxic to democracy, and unfortunately is a bipartisan effort.
