Japan declares state of emergency in Tokyo area to contain new Covid-19 surge

Japan declared a state of emergency in Tokyo and three adjoining areas as Covid-19 cases continue to surge. Tokyo recorded 2,447 new cases in the last 24 hours. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced it and strongly urged self-restriction, which will be without penalty, from Friday until February 7. The government requested restaurants and bars to close by 8pm. Malls and schools will remain open.
