DeVos becomes second cabinet secretary to resign over riots
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned from the Trump administration Thursday, a day after pro-Trump protesters descended on the Capitol. DeVos is the second member of the Trump cabinet to quit in response to the rioting. Earlier, transportation Secretary Elaine Chao submitted her resignation. ’There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation,’ DeVos said in a rebuke to Trump.
As it seems like Trump is no longer a viable political ally, we will see a lot of similar actions in the upcoming days and weeks: the impact of her resignation has no adverse effect of her prospects and will only serve to distance her from Trump, perhaps sparing her of some of the splatter. Unfortunately this is reliant on continuation of the bipolar split between those who feel loyalty to Trump and those who are, or benefit from, the establishment.
