Trump’s Twitter eviction ’problematic,’ says Merkel

German Chancellor Merkel has called Twitter’s decision to evict US President Trump from its platform as ’problematic.’ Merkel’s spokesperson said the operators of social media platforms ’bear great responsibility for political communication not being poisoned by hatred, by lies and by incitement to violence,’ adding that the freedom of opinion is a fundamental right of ’elementary significance.’

Well it is problematic, I don't like the orange ****, but deplatforming him will rile up the people who support him. Preventing someone from speaking doesn't prove that they have nothing worth while to say, only that you fear what they might say.

Glad to hear a politician defend Western values. Really glad to hear it. Trump took it too far, and the radicals that take to violence in his name are as extreme as any radical group. That doesn't mean you revoke freedoms. Twitter is a company that is allowed to circumvent guaranteed freedoms, and people are defending this ability because of personal biases. They shouldn't be allowed to do that. Disagreeing with our freedoms is anti-American.

An unexpected ally, but a welcome one at that.

Meh, Merkel has a rather poor history with defending free speech herself, though Europe does have a much healthier fear of the US tech monopolies that most Americans cannot truly appreciate.

She probably sees the writing on the wall. Telling more than a third of America that they don't get a day in court, in Congress, and we won't follow precedent or allow any peaceable way to resolve any grievances, then there's only one result that can happen. By working so hard to censor and remove Trump early, these people are willfully pushing to get this outcome. Play stup¡d games, win stup¡d prizes.

I'm still not understanding why the platforms don't allow ALL speech and if someone says or does something illegal, call the cops. Organize a riot, go to jail. If we get into this mode of regulating opinions to the point of "I think the election was stolen" is a criminal act, we are screwed. People in China get arrested for saying things like "Tienemen Square was a massacre of the people", but here in the US, expressing opinions shouldn't be squelched on a public platform.

Wow, I don't like her very much, but atleast she can see the danger in silencing someone and not just proving them incorrect. I'm happy she can see the value of freedom of speech. It blows my mind that anyone could be for political censorship

Which is exactly what our government should be saying. Instead they are aiding and supporting it.

Lol, but in Germany you can’t criticize refugees or their religion without being attacked. Germany has a pretty bad record of “free speech”, so this is kind of just virtue signaling

You know you've gone way past "too far left" when even Merkel is calling you out.

Sad that the German chancellor understand our freedom of speech more than our Dem leaders.

Europe has reasonable politicians with foresite. They know what authoritarianism can lead to.

Freedom of opinion and speech not freedom to force private enterprise to do what one political party wants. Republicans are free to create a competing platform at any time, unless they are to pathetic to do so. By their own creed.

The 1st Amendment is being trampled on all over the place here. Trump didn't incite anything or make anyone act in anyway. If this was someone rhe media backed they would even say it was a powerful speech. But the spin isn't on his side and we are mostly hearing from the loud people with media backing. I don't condone the violence but a lot atinks here. Also, please explain how congress can get so much work done when ir comes to Trump but can't even put in 1% of that effort for any plight of the people. Maybe they should be asking why people are so mad...and that may be why. People don't feel represented or heard..so they are making themselves heard and unfortunately violence seems to be the only way they are responding. They need to find a different way and open their eyes. Biden didn't get elected becuase people like him or his agenda. He got elected because he wasn't Trump. If you had a halfway likeable person with Trumps following, Biden qould have been killed. They seem to forget that their ideas aren't overly popular. Only their checks.

So let me get this straight. The anti government Republicans want government to step in and tell Twitter who and who it can not ban?

Well then maybe Republicans shouldn't have campaigned for decades to protect corporations more than actual people.

Teaching people to believe in conspiracy theories resulting in the inciting of riots is not an opinion....nor should it be treated as one...not should it be protected by the constitution.

Candy, Nope read the article again. The article says nothing about supporting America or its citizens. If you read on Merkel actual lays the blame on Trump. Thanks to Trump and all those who supported him, YOU HAVE NO ALLIES!! Maybe Biden can rebuild those relationships 🤣🇨🇦
