Judge halts Lisa Montgomery’s execution hours before she was scheduled to die

A judge has granted another stay in Lisa Montgomery’s execution, who was scheduled to be given lethal injection Tuesday. If it was carried out, she would have been the first woman in federal death row to be executed in 67 years. The judge cited the need to determine Montgomery’s mental health. Montgomery killed an expectant mother, cut the baby from her womb and passed off the newborn as her own.

Im not a death penalty advocate, but this woman needs to no longer exist. Mentally competent or not.

"Needs to determine mental state" she killed a woman and cut her baby out of thebdead woman's stomach and there is a question as to her mental state.... seems completely sane to me...

Needed to check the mental state of the person we convicted for an extremely heinous crime right before we were going to kill her. For what?

Somewheres you can bets there's a handshake betweens someone keeping her locked up and someone making moneys off her stay of execution. Dueling banjos playing in the background...

The government should not be killing it’s own citizens period.

I would be fine with the stay of execution if there was new evidence of exoneration but I'll be honest. I really don't care about this woman's mental health. She already had to be bat shit insane to kill a woman and cut out her baby only to try and pass it off as her own.

I remember when a guy who beheaded and ate the organs of a guy he was sitting next on a gray hound bus. They released him quietly after his jail time (not even all of it). It's scary that people like that can be released into the public. This is a messed up world .

Dont think you gotta have a physic degree to know this b!tch is a bubble off. What we need to address in this country is what do we do with the mentally challenged? If there's been multiple reports of an individuals mental instability and becouse of the failure of our system to react this leads to an atrocity shouldn't we as a people share in the blaim? Rhetorical from my perspective but really curious of others views. That being said I am a definite believer that people resort to violence when their intellect fails them. Always have and always will ingrained in our DNA kinda cr@p. Just an opinion.

I oppose the death penalty. To do so, you need to confront the hard cases and this definitely is one. Many of the reasons that commonly apply to question an execution -- such as doubt about guilt or race bias -- clearly don't apply. While I oppose the death penalty, it isn't an issue I have given a great deal of thought to, so mostly I'll defer to those who have such as this site: But I'll also comment because, as noted, some of the "13 reasons" don't apply here so I'll highlight those that do that I think are most salient. 1) She may deserve to die but does society have the right to execute her? "Let he who is without sin ...". And, even here, there is bias in the legal system as I think it is very unlikely she would be being executed if she were rich. 2) Moral responsibility. Clearly she committed the crime, but it didn't just come out of nowhere. She had a horrific life and was deranged for reasons. Can society, which allowed her to be horribly mistreated, really put all the blame on her. As I noted, I'm not really the best to be making this arguments, but I did want to speak up for opponents of the death penalty to say that, as bad as this crime is, there is a case to be made to commute the sentence.

Why are meddling judges always interrupting executions? To get attention and try to buy left wing political capital?

The fact of the matter is that she committed a heinous crime and is a threat to anyone around her. It is past time for her to leave. However, I would be interested to see a PET scan of her brain. I'd be willing to bet its as deformed as John Hinckley's brain.

If they don't stop playing and carry out her sentence. Whether she is crazy or not she did it and should be held accountable.
