Uganda’s President Museveni shuts social media ahead of election, warns Facebook

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ordered a shutdown of social media ahead of a tense election. He accused Facebook of ’arrogance’ after the platform purged accounts linked to his re-election campaign. He warned Facebook that taking a position against the ruling party would jeopardize the social media giant’s operations in the country. Currently, Facebook and WhatsApp aren’t working in Uganda.

Now that's one of the worst consequences of big tech banning Trump. By doing so they've just earned a bad reputation of unfree and unreliable media, and now real dictatorships can accuse them of being a threat to "freedom of speech" and "democracy" and have a good excuse to just ban them if they need or want to.

In blatant hypocrisy, Twitter condemns the move: “Access to information and freedom of expression, including the public conversation on Twitter, is never more important than during democratic processes, particularly elections.” ... while they repeatedly blocked access to information in the US and are now being sued for it.

Social media should not meddle in elections. Where this would be a red flag in the past, current events make me change my mind. I understand why you would want to ban twitter and facebook these days.

Keep in mind, if facebook were held by conservatives (instead of socialists) there would be a move to remove it. I.e. Parler

Unless governments and citizens stand up to people like Zuckerberg, Cook, Bezos and of course Google they will start to own us. Collectively while businesses in the lockdown collapsed in total the f#%^ oligarchs have become collectively $2 trillion richer.

Twitters repsonse: thats not fair we should have every right to meddle in your elections. Tone deaf

Last year's big tech is acting like a world government. By blocking an closing of all accounts that don't fit theire narrative, they infringed many governments including in the us and eu. In my country several political mp's are getting banned. While others, from the left side, who scream for violence against the white, don't get banned. It's a good thing, silicon valley can't intervene in elections.

Social media is not the sincere and free expression of the people. With enough money, populistic propaganda can be easily brought to trending and a lie repeated enough times, becomes an undeniable truth, based on which its supporters would fight or even start a riot/insurrection. Sounds familiar??. No wonder Social Media are being suspended.
