Pelosi announces fines for lawmakers who don’t comply with firearms screening

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday she wants fines of up to $10,000 for lawmakers who refuse to be screened for firearms at entrances to the House of Representatives. Metal detectors were erected at entrances to the House floor on Tuesday in the wake of last week’s riots. Members will vote on a rule change mandating fines when the House returns to session Jan. 21.

Ok so on paper it is a punishment for failure to follow a certain rule, but in practice the security can be voluntarily bypassed so it's basically 5,000 dollars to be able to walk around the metal detectors. I don't like this because it is turning the capitol buildings into the forbidden city. Soon the only place to protest something will be the DC annex across the street from the Wendy's by the interstate or something, or back in the forests of Virginia or Maryland.

Seems fair, the intent of the metal detectors is to help protect everyone inside. Therefore everyone inside should be subjected to them. This is basic logic. Lawmakers who cannot abide by these basic rules and cannot figure out this logic should probably not have a say in making major decisions for our country.

Why are they allowed to bypass security? Kind of makes it pointless. As for the Republicans complaining that it's somehow infringing on them in some way, welcome to the reality of the 21st century in the United States. Millions of citizens are required to be screened by metal detectors every day in order to go to work or school, the fact that you are offended by this requirement applying to you shows how far removed from the reality your constituents live in you really are.

Cheri.....Judges are permitted to carry on their coutrooms if they have a permit. One in four say they already do. I guess your rather make false statements than do 5 minutes reasearch. Typical leftist.

I think Capitol Hill police proved they're incapable and or unwilling to protect these people. The typical democrat solution to a problem is exactly the opposite of what is needed so here Pelosi goes trying to disarm people. You are the only person that can be responsible for your safety.

@Benjamin - What planet do you come from? Court houses have been doing this for years. Have you never been called up for jury duty and been screened before you entered? NO ONE should be allowed to carry a weapon into a Federal or State government building. Generally there are officers present to protect the people who enter, and people coming to one of those buildings to conduct their business should not have to fear that some disgruntled person has come there to commit some heinous act. That should hold true even in open carry States.

Why don't they just post mental-health experts in the building?
