At Saturday’s digital convention, Armin Laschet, the 59-year-old Prime Minister of North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s largest state, was elected leader of Germany’s largest political party, the CDU. He succeeds Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the successor of Angela Merkel. Laschet, a centrist, beat Friedrich Merz, the favorite candidate of the conservative wing in a runoff.
