Cold wave hits Sahara, parts of Saudi Arabia covered in snow

The Sahara desert had a sharp chill blast that plummeted temperatures below freezing point and covered parts of it in snow. Snow also blanketed parts of Saudi Arabia, which saw the mercury hit 28-degrees Fahrenheit (–2.22-degrees celsius). Although snow blanketing the sand dunes of the Sahara is not unheard of, the chill blast is considered to be unusual at this time of the year.

In all seriousness, this is pretty nifty. I'd love to know what exactly caused the anomaly. Seeing sand dusted on top of snow is pretty cool looking too.
