Component failure in NASA’s SLS rocket test

This past weekend, the long awaited Space Launch System was tested by NASA. This big project by NASA will be used for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and even beyond. This large and complex rocket system is already well beyond schedule. During the latest test, the core stage ended abruptly due to the triggering of a failure indicator. The issue is being investigated by both NASA and Boeing.

Yeah, congress should have defunded SLS long ago. Incredibly expensive, massively over budget, outdated technology. I mean, I love space. And space exploration still needs the support from the US government. But there would be much better things to spend those dollars at. Reused Shuttle engines, upgraded shuttle boosters, basically nothing is really new and nothing of it pushes the development of new future technologies. It’s basically a completely outdated design. It would be OK if for reusing that tech it would become cheap but at the contrary it’s expensive. It uses the Spaceshittlw engines, maybe the best rocket engines developed thus far, arguably even better than what SpaceX has, never failed once, reused many times. Their only flaw: they are expensive. Very very expensive for a rocket engine. For the Spaceshittlw that was OK because it was meant to be reused many times ao an expensive engine was OK as long as it was reliable and didn’t need much maintenance to be reused. On the SLS these reusable, extremely expensive engines are just discarded with the whole rocket. The only reason why this rocket still exists and might even fly is for the jobs it provides. Building a Saturn V sized non-reusable rocket with tech from the eighties takes a lot of manpower. And while I understand that argument, when it’s the main argument for a government investment, look carefull if there aren’t better ways of spending that money. Ways that create jobs and at the same time develop future technology where your country could get a lead in or other such benefits like providing public infrastructure.
