Can you imagine being the vise to the worse president in all of American history that culminates in a failed coup. Then try to navigate the guilt of his role by merely being compliant. Now we can go back to the standard deflection and tunnel vision.

Pence is trying save his own behind, he knows the republican party is going to split, Trumpism causes so much anger it poses a threat to them all and will eat them alive if they don’t have some sensible people take the wheel

I can't imagine why. The President only invited a mob to invade the Capitol in a speech that mentioned Pence "doing the right thing" @ ten times. The fact that he barely escaped a pack of terrorists who were calling for him to be hanged when he didn't comply probably has no bearing on his decision. Why wouldn't he want to join a frenzied crowd of fanatics that want to lynch him?
