Google threatens to leave Australia

Google has threatened that it might stop making Google Search available in Australia. The statement was said during an Australian parliamentary hearing regarding a proposed law which forces Google to pay news publishers for the right to link to their content. In a press conference, the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison said that the country does not respond to threats.

It's evidently time to move beyond these tech giants. They think they can threaten and manipulate their way into anything they want. Well clearly they can to a certain extent but now to attempt to block sovereign states to implement laws. That's a line that should not be crossed.

This could be an interesting development for smaller search engines. I wonder if Google is such an essential platform/service/tool for businesses that buy ads.
