Amid protests, Poland implements tribunal ruling to ban nearly all abortions

Despite large-scale countrywide protests, the Polish government has kept good its promise to implement a court ruling that imposes a near-total ban on abortions in the country. In ruling last year, a constitutional tribunal made almost all abortions, including abortion of congenitally damaged fetuses, unconstitutional. Poland’s human rights commissioner denounced the move as ’tragedy for women.’

Direct quote, "Once the ruling goes into effect, abortion will only be permitted in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger." What other reason do you need?

This is a great move. Abortion should not be offered as a form of birth control.

Good job, Poland! Taking a stance and not being swayed by noisy people.

Acknowledgement that all life is precious is an important progressive step in human evolution. The future will look back on the day we stopped killing our young as a method of birth control as a massive step for civil rights and the beginning of removing this stain on human history. Well done Poland for ushering in this progressive move in basic human rights.👍🏽 Abortions normalization by racists in their push for eugenic ideological goals was detestable and the fact that it has remained this long in society is disgusting. Margaret Sanger and her abortion movement that attempted to reduc" "undesirable trai"s" (minority dna) from the gene pool was never noble and never about women. We need to reject abortion and 't's racist roots 100%. There is no place for that type of beliefs in tod'y's world.

This is a terrible attack on women's reproductive rights, and likely won't decrease the number of abortions, anyway. "Abortion rates are relatively similar between countries with highly restrictive abortion laws and those where the procedure is permitted without restriction, at between 34 and 37 per 1,000 women annually [PDF], but the safety of the procedure diverges widely: almost 90 percent of abortions in countries with liberal abortion laws are considered safe, compared with only 25 percent of those in countries in which abortion is banned." https://www.cfr.org/article/abortion-law-global-comparisons All Poland is doing is setting up a system for punishing women who end up with accidental pregnancies. It'll be like the American war on drugs: great at imprisoning people who didn't commit a violent crime, but terrible at actually controlling the number of people doing it.

I support women's rights - at the same time this is a great step towards personal accountability, which I would argue that without it any rights are meaningless in the first place.

To those who are saying women use abortion as a form of birth control. An abortion is a traumatic experience for a woman, no one would use it instead of birth control. By saying you think women do, it shows just how little you know about it and it makes you look like a fool. Stop trying to build that straw man, it gets blown over so easily that no one can take anything you say afterwards seriously. Stick to your "all life is precious" argument or your religious point of view, it'll suit your much better in a debate.

Ok so serious birth defects are probably the only reason I would consider abortion. Like if the kid is just going to live a few agonizing weeks what is the point, just put him out of his misery.

''Womens healthcare'' is covered by legislation if her life is endangered. That's what healthcare is supposed to be about. Saving lives, not killing in the name of the irresponsible. The ''protesters'' of course are the usual NGO foot soldiers who do NOT represent the people.

Sounds great, let's let dead fetuses drag their mothers into death with them. Sounds totally like their objection to abortion is based on valuing life.

That summary is gross. Congenitally damaged fetus just means that the child has a birth defect. This is included as Down Syndrome, Spinal Bifida, and various other birth defects. These defects are not grounds to abort a child, and using terms like 'damaged' is disrespectful to people who live everyday with these disabilities and have wholesome and meaningful lives. We cannot decide if someone's life matters. Whether that life is wanted or not. All lives matter. Period.

Its about individuals rights at this point. This kinda move always leads to more trouble than its worth. The alternative is unsafe back alley operations that are more dangerous.

seriously? even medically necessary ones? Poland is going to see a lot of women dying or giving birth to diseased or deformed children that many won't have the resources to care for, and young women will be killing themselves with black market abortions or even just normal suicide. This is too far. Humans are not ready for an abortion ban - neither medically or societally. This will backfire, mark my words.

You look the other way when you got too many births. You go down on it hard when the trend reverses. Is it so, over there.

I started using this app because i thought, as it was presented to me, that it’d be a place of more thoughtfulness, education, and possibly intellectuality, than a common social network for people who “think with their guts” and let terrible idiologies supersede the dignity of the human being. For sure i wouldn’t have expected to see so many far-right comments under each and every post, in this particular case telling women what they should and shouldn’t do, or pushing one’s own religion onto someone else. I must say i’m getting disappointed, i like the idea behind this app a lot, but i hope these comment sections won’t become a new, more polite version of, Parler.
