US jobless claims return to September highs as pandemic impacts economy

US jobless claim numbers have returned to numbers not seen since last September amid the pressure from the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. Despite a drop last autumn, the increase after the holiday season is evident. With 847,000 unemployment claims, the gradual uptick that began over the Thanksgiving holiday in November of last year is continuing into the new year.
