In Turkey, 159 detained for protesting against Erdogan-appointed varsity head

Turkish police detained 159 people over protests in Istanbul against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s appointment of a new rector in Bogazici University – one of the country’s best seats of learning. Students and teachers had been protesting against Melih Bulu’s appointment as rector for weeks, calling it undemocratic. On Monday, students clashed with police, following which they were rounded up.
