A German man, 100, has been charged with 3,518 counts of being an accessory to murder as a Schutzstaffel (SS) member at the Nazi concentration camp in Sachsenhausen during the World War II. The man, who hasn’t been named yet because of German privacy laws, worked between 1942 and 1945 at the camp as an enlisted SS member. Over 40,000 died at the Sachsenhausen camp, which was set up in 1936.
This is absolutely ridicules, we had the Nuremberg trials, we had other trials, this is a political stunt to try and make people feel that there are still Nazis prominent in society. Under what jurisdiction was he tried? Because unless it was under UK, US, French, and Russian laws, then this is completely unethical.
2051: 63 year old US Army veteran arrested and charged with accessory to 4,763,829,252 deaths.
Never forgive, never forget. How do we know he wasn't forced to?
The point is to make future soldiers think twice about committing war crimes, knowing there's no statue of limitations and no valid reason. Obviously no one's happy to see an old man suffer, but the impact on the people who will be ordered to help with genocide later on is what matters. It takes an extremely rare commitment to supersede military commands after all the conditioning that's standard for armed forces. A single iota of dissent from a soldier ordered to commit war crimes makes a huge difference.
I personally believe strongly in the effectiveness of deterents, but I hope his trial is held based on how the government would have responded at the time. I don't want future soldiers to base their actions on the repercussion they might face due to cutural shifts. Otherwise, governments can change laws to make certain actions illegal, and then prosecute people who were still law abiding when they committed the now-specified crime. Hold the man accountable by all means, nazísm should be punished at all levels. But this man is 100 years old. He isn't the same man anymore, and the country he lives in isn't the same anymore either. Weigh his crimes in the context they were committed.
Weird how certain ppl can’t let go of the past..every race and gender of ppl went through pain and suffering, read a book!
Absolutely absurd
75 years and they wait till he is 100? Kinda pointless
Seems pretty pointless now, but justice must be done
What's the point in putting a grandpa to trial for this, also why just now and - I don't know - any other time in the past 70 years??!! The war is over, long gone, nobody cares about that anymore, imo a waste of the court's resources.
Truly, a pointless vengeance. He likely won't even be alive by the time the trial date comes around.
For everyone crying "Oh he's 100, what's the point?" Well, least in US, omergird slavery happened too 100+ yes ago! MAKR DEM GREAT GRAND KIDS PAAAYY!!!
Why now? Is there any human decency left? 100 years old, nothing more than a media stunt all while destroying this mans assumed final days
2069 : Former President Kanye charged with 1,898,769 civilian deaths from continued war in Middle East.
One has to ask.... So why wait until to now?
I've changed and grown in even just five years. I wonder what I would do with 76 years. The guy was about 24. Of course go after war criminals, but dang, that's a grudge. Just don't lose yourself over it.
Why all of the sudden are there posts about the holocaust. Can't wait until that whole generation passes, I'm tired of hearing about it.
