Supreme Court stays Alabama execution over inmate’s request for pastor
The US Supreme Court stayed the scheduled execution of Willie B Smith III after the judges upheld a lower court’s ruling that required Smith’s personal pastor to be in the death chamber with him during his execution. The stay came in the same night when Smith was to be put to death in Alabama’s William C Holman Correctional Facility. Smith was convicted for the 1991 murder of Sharma Ruth Johnson.
