Amid complaints from residents of longer response times and increased violent crime, Minneapolis’ City Council voted unanimously to approve $6.4M in funding that police had requested, despite prior calls by certain councillors and advocates to replace the department with a public safety alternative. The department cited a shortage of nearly 200 personnel mainly due to resignations & medical leave.
Well you can't just defund the police and not have a backup implemented. Defunding the police is fine, as long as those funds are going to social workers to respond to nonviolent calls and into development of the communities to gradually bring the crime rate down. If you just cut off the police without addressing anything else first, you end up worse off than you started.
