UK’s Supreme Court has ruled that Uber drivers in the country should be classed as ’workers’ and not self-employed. The ruling stands to threaten Uber’s business model and holds broader implications for the gig economy. This entitles Uber drivers to benefits such as paid holidays and minimum wage. Uber, which has 65,000 active drivers in the UK, argued that drivers were independent contractors.
Gig economy is cancer anyway. If you want to be a contractor and manage your time however you want, sure. But being a company that has thousands of employees and hiding behind the veil of ''we're just an app!'' is a dick move. When social media platforms will lose their public platform clause and become liable for their content hosting, then we'll be another step closer to getting back to normal. Uber, Twitter, Facebook, all of tech needs to be reigned in.
I don't get this, Uber isn't forcing people to accept their work model why is a government interfering with the free will of people. I just can't wait till the government designates the kid mowing lawns for 20 bucks as a worker and forces the homeowners to provide dental.
Way off in the background there may also be tax implications. As an employee, Uber drivers will likely have fewer tax write offs than they have as self employed sub contractors.
That’s not going to work out well. Uber will probably pull out of the UK now. Well done, UK, you played yourself.
Too bad. I’m sure a significant number of Uber drivers would prefer to be self employed.
And this is why we can’t have nice things. Nah, screw Uber...
Nice!! Let’s see how this plays out, might get a part time “gig” with Uber
UK economy at its finest
Well UK, i hope you enjoyed Uber while it lasted.
It must be nice to have a small group of people in robes to set policies for an entire country.
What a bunch of bull. If gig economy workers aren't self employed then no one is. Terrible ruling, but I'm not surprised the government wants to stick it's nose into more business relationships.
Behind the scenes look. https://youtu.be/Q80ElML7KGk
I'm expected mass layoffs or huge price rises, hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it
Does this mean they'll pay their taxes?
About time the bully tech to be put at their places.
The Gig Economy was perfect for those who used it a second or third job when they already had a basic primary income. It was when to many people became dependent on the Gig full time that the problems started to happen. This is going to hurt some people real bad but overall this is a great judgement for workers rights going forward... Not sure how much longer workers are going to be able to work though as they are about to be rapidly replaced by technology.
Never used it, don't care.
You needed a court declaration for that !? What you been doing living in oblivion !?
Its silly we even needed to have that discussion
Surely taking away self employment takes away empowerment and control away from the drivers?
