Trophy hunter sparks anger for posing with giraffe’s heart as ’gift’ to husband

Merelize Van Der Merwe, a South African trophy hunter, triggered an outrage for posing with the heart of an adult male giraffe she had just shot and describing it as her Valentine’s Day present to her husband. Merwe, 32, angered social media users when she shared the gruesome image on Facebook after her ’wonderful’ husband spent over $2,000 to make her dream come true at a Sun City game resort.

This isn't a sport, it's a disgusting way to spend $$. You're sick if you find this fun & entertaining. Killing an innocent animal is proof that you're a piece of 💩💩💩

How brutal! How inhumane! That poor animal could have lived to a ripe old age, and then get eaten alive by hyenas when it’s too sick and slow to run away—which I’m sure it would have preferred.

Look, I hate trophy hunting, and poaching is obviously a terrible crime, but as much as I dislike the idea of killing for sport, this is how the conservations raise money. An animal, generally a male, will show aggressive tendencies that make them a danger to the others, and they will alow someone to pay a lot of money to take it out. It raises a ton of money for conservation efforts and eliminates problems.

I don’t like trophy hunting at all, but what’s so fantastic about killing a giraffe in particular? They’re pretty docile..
