In Ecuador, 62 dead in prison riots in 3 cities as gangs vie for supremacy

At least 62 inmates have been killed in clashes between gangs contesting for supremacy in prisons in three Ecuadorian cities. Edmundo Moncayo, director of prisons, said the clashes broke out late Monday in jails in Cuenca, Guayaquil and Latacunga, where 33, 21 and eight inmates died respectively. He said nearly 70% of the country’s prisoners are lodged in the prisons where the riots took place.

Prisons are nothing more than breeding grounds for bad ideas, cynicism and violence. I bet if these people weren't shoved in a metal box and denied human decency these kinds of riots wouldn't happen. Rehabilitate, don't punish.
