Papua New Guinea’s ’Father of the Nation’ dies

Sir Michael Somare, who led Papua New Guinea to independence, has died in Port Moresby, aged 84. Somare, the country’s Grand Chief and longest-serving prime minister, was revered as a pivotal figure in the country’s peaceful transformation from colony to independent nation. Somare’s death came after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He served four terms as prime minister.
