Top Biden aide says White House will start acting on slavery reparations ’now’

White House advisor Cedric Richmond said President Joe Biden’s administration will start studying reparations for descendants of slaves in America soon. Biden supported the idea of forming a panel to study the issue. Speaking to ’Axios on HBO,’ Richmond said, ’We don’t want to wait on a study. We’re going to start acting now.’ Reparations had been debated for decades in the US without progress.

Just curious, why should I, as someone who has never owned slaves and has not had family that has, be responsible for the theft of my money by the state to be given to a group of people who were also never slaves, and who may or may not be the descendant of one. Maybe, instead of saying all this bad stuff is the remnants of slavery we should look to the welfare state that has caused the destruction of the black family unit, and the zoning, gerrymandering and red lining practices that still exist to this day that are the root cause of many of the issues seen by black families specifically and poor families in general? Seems like a better place to start.

After the civil war Abraham Lincoln with the help of congress and the world powers helped create Liberia and fund EVERY slave who WANTED to leave this country for a one way trip back to Africa. Alot left, alot stayed. If you're black in america today then you are the direct descentdant of a person who DECLINED his one way ticket back to Africa. You are not due for any reperations for a choice your ancestors made. If youre that upset then I say we refund the program to move you back to a country in africa of your choice. And NEVER EVER BRING THIS S#!T UP AGAIN.

Devil's in the details. Even if you start with the assumption that African Americans today are owed some kind of material compensation for what happened to slaves, how would you fund and portion out such a program. How would you trace back the lineage of slave when many black families can't trace back 3 generations, assuming the father is around? How can you justify taking money from ppl who has nothing to do with slavery? What about those whose ancestors were abolitionists? The most important question is "will it help African Americans in any real, long lasting, and tangible way?". How would you measure that? If it doesn't then why are we considering this in the first place? Or is this just making politicians feel better about themselves by using money that isn't theirs, including money from they very people that claim to help?

What about the Asians who were slaves (they built the railroad out west)? What about the Native American slaves? What about the White slaves too? Get over yourselves!

I agree with reparations! The black population need to pay the white population for transport from Africa to the US and admission to the United States lest they still be over there wallowing in poverty with no hope of getting out and warring with one another. Then theres the reparations due for the loss of over 600,000 white lives during the Civil War and the equivalent of Billions of dollars of damages in Southern cities and towns. They can also pay reparations for the, on average, -$10,000 taxes they pay per year after the cost of government services they consume vs. taxes they pay.

Ah, whatever happened to “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Like it or not, the buck will have to stop somewhere, folks.

My family always lived in the north. We never owned slaves, or agreed with slavery. I have a man in my lineage who fought. We don't owe anything. I will not pay.

Reperations are a terrible idea. I think if the implement reperations, you must take a DNA test to prove your bloodline was that of a slave.

...becauase freedom just is not enough..craziness. so are we all collectively responsible for these reparations? Are we also gonna trace back through the ages of the countries of origin of descendants and impose this upon multiple countries? If you are living today, are free and able to work, educate, feed and cloth yourself...the country, and the world at large owes you nothing.

What a waste of time. Every minute wasted on this sided-topic is a minute stolen from providing the stimulus checks as fast as possible to all people including black people in a dire time, and saving people including black people during this flu with accelerated and obsessive vaccine and testing apparatus expansion and administration, and getting business up and running as soon as possible by resolving the aforementioned which happens to include black business. Reparation ain't worth squat if people are dead, crippled, or bankrupt. The oil line that Biden so foolishly closed down would also have been reparation by contributing to black employment and help funds, an actual tangible direct impact as opposed to abstract philosophizing about reparation. Worthless, useless, inefficient, and ineffective, is all that encompasses the reparation topic during this time.

Reparations will never satisfy the people. When Reparations run out then one? I feel like our nation is being black mailed and the congressmen show no backbone in stopping it.

I'll quit paying taxes

Everyone in this thread asks why. Why you ask? So our president can continue his campaign for the next presidency is the answer.

No one alive today deserves reparations the only time it would have made sense would've been right after the Civil War

Stefnir 1 months

How would the US government pay for this? Would it create a slave reparations tax? Does that mean it would also force the descendants of those who fought against slavery to pay for it? Would it punish people who's family never owned slaves? I agree that there are racist assholes and that black people struggle because of them, but this sounds like pandering to the black community than anything else. No man or woman alive today in America owns a slave or has been a slave. This seems like a poor idea.

Giving money to people that probably hate this country is not the solution and they will probably still complain. As rude as that sounds it's still the truth.

Why don’t we as Americans citizens vote in competent, intelligent and patriotic people to run our country putting America FIRST instead of LAST and take care of our own citizens so no one would need any reparations? Why can’t we all just be grateful to live in this nation, work hard and stop wanting constant hand outs? It’s not going to solve anything. Insanity...

Let’s stoke vengeance and retribution into society based on a two centuries old rivalry and then let’s call those who oppose it racists bigots and white supremacists, even if their family moved from Sweden to USA 10 years ago. They are white so they must be held accountable for America’s past right?
