Hundreds of kidnapped schoolgirls are freed in Nigeria

The governor of Zamfara in Nigeria has confirmed the release of hundreds of schoolgirls abducted last week from a boarding school in the state. 279 girls have been freed, Gov. Bello Matawalle said. Gunmen abducted the girls from the Government Girls Junior Secondary School in Jangebe town on Friday. Nigeria has seen several such attacks and kidnappings in recent years.

Good. But why? What was the motive of the kidnappers? To scare girls into not going to school? To sell them as slaves? To turn them into soldiers? To trade their release for some boon from the Government?
