Brazil’s Supreme Court clears ex-leader Lula of graft convictions

Brazil’s Supreme Court has overturned the graft convictions against former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This clears his path to contest the 2022 presidential election. Lula was convicted of two corruption charges involving the state-owned Petrobras oil company. He had spent over 18 months in prison before being freed in 2019. The country’s prosecutor general’s office said it would appeal.

As much as the judge who was in charge of the investigation fucked up. This is not going to make things better. Bolsonaro is an idiot, he's beyond the point of reasonable defense. But Lula knows how to be a populist to gain some trust and steal from behind the scenes. He's likely to get re-elected because he's a media darling, on the short term he might fix Bolsonaro's fuck-ups. But will leave Brazil as the banana republic it has been for a long time now.
