China’s legislature has approved a resolution to overhaul Hong Kong’s electoral system. The resolution will allow a pro-Beijing panel to vet and elect candidates. The next step is a formal bill, which could be implemented in the city within a few months. The move follows a series of measures from China that have tightened Beijing’s grip on Hong Kong.
The late 1980s and early 1990s had so much hope. The Berlin Wall fell, Eastern Europe was freed (though Yugoslavia would become a mess), and though the Tiananmen protests did not succeed, we thought it was only a matter of time before China became like Taiwan. Communism / totalitarianism seemed to be on its way out. Now, in 2021, the West is becoming far less free, and Hong Kong is losing what grip it had on democracy. The future is looking dark, indeed.
Where the apologists for China. Come on kids those Che Guevara tee shirts you mom and dad bought for you on Amazon are going to waste.
I can't believe it took them this long to do it. Farewell Hong Kong, you had a good run!
Giving the Democratic Party ideas I see.
They, the CCP, are calling this "election reform"
#Nuke Beijing
keep buying Chinese goods manufactured by a murdering government, round eyes!
Why is this news?
Hunter BIDEN will get a seat on the panel
Another open air prison
Can't trust Xi nor the CCP. He has no honour
They make it sound like it was an objective decision when they are carrying out the dictators orders.
What, it took them this long? I thought they approved that before they took over the Hong Kong parliament.
Wow, literally called on day one.
Free China Hong Kong eliminate the ccp!
.....as Nancy Pelosi takes notes.
CCP legislators, that is so funny.
And here I thought it was AK-47's and steel toed boots.
I can't begin to understand what it must be like for HK citizens amidst this transition. Not a thing they can do but allow the CCP to forcefully take control of their once-democratic region
