The Senate confirmed Rep Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) as President Joe Biden’s interior secretary by a 51–40 vote. She is now the first Native American to in the cabinet. Haaland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo. In 2018, Haaland and Rep Sharice Davids (D-Kansas) became the first Native American women elected to Congress. Haaland said her department has a role in harnessing clean energy.
