Japan court rules country’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional

A Japanese court ruled that the government’s ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. The Sapporo District Court said sexuality, like race and gender, isn’t a matter of individual preference. Thus, prohibiting same-sex couples from getting benefits given to heterosexual couples can’t be justified. Japan is the only G7 country that doesn’t have legal backing of same-sex unions.
