Tanzania swears in first female president

Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan has been sworn in as the country’s first female president after the sudden death of John Magufuli. Hassan, 61, from Zanzibar, will finish Magufuli’s second five-year term, set to run until 2025. Magufuli died aged 61 from a heart condition after a mysterious three week absence from public view. Rumors suggest Magufuli, a fervent Covid-sceptic, had caught the virus.

Hey, if she was the most qualified for the position, then good on her. Leadership is genderless in my opinion. As long as the person can do the job well, it shouldn't matter.

Tanzania criminalized female genital mutilation in 1998, dropped its rates heavily. Many religious groups still practice it though in spite of the law. Hopefully Samia as a woman cracks down on the remnants of this practice to resolve it for good. Good luck to her anyhow.
