Overseas spectators barred from the Tokyo Olympics

Overseas spectators barred from the Tokyo Olympics

Overseas spectators will not be allowed to attend this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The decision comes due to continuing uncertainty amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with international travel restricted and variant coronavirus strains emerging. The Olympic Games are due to begin on 23 Jul and end on 8 Aug. The Paralympics take place from 24 Aug-5 Sep.

Sad. But somewhat understandable. It would seem that if a person has been vaccinated twice as prescribed, is beyond the time for immunity to occur and has tested negative AFTER that, then just maybe they should be allowed to attend. But Japan is a soverign country. I feel that they could do a bit better in allowing people from abroad, who are pretty much safe, to attend. Again, it's their country and it's their call.

They have a majority aging/elderly population. Out of most countries their cause for concern is a little bit more understandable.

Unfortunate but somewhat understandable erring on the side of extreme caution. Of course the athletes and their support crews are just as capable of being carriers. I gather without the tourism factor, these Olympics will be a financial disaster.

This is the best case scenario for Japan, actually. It used to be a prestigious honor to host the Olympics, but in the last few decades, it has been a net drain on the host country's resources. Having COVID-19 and its variants as a reasonable excuse to deny foreign spectators entry will save Japan a lot of hassle - particularly the mountains of litter that would have been produced. They dodged a bullet on this one.

Another not so great first for a great event. Hope it schtinks enuf somewhere and which can make it a real necessity to be more nature friendly and less god friendly.

“Nearly 80 percent of the public wants the Olympics postponed or canceled altogether, according to some polls.”... Really! Well according to other polls 100% of the people want the games to go on as normal. And since your “story” sites no sources for your polls. the poll that I took here in my living room is just as valid. Even on a simple story like this I can’t get journalism any more. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

So basically " let's do a big thing about Olympics... we WANT!! Let's pay Millions on top of millions for the venue but refuse foreigners from coming to support their team" Like that is a good idea.... (sarcasm)

Do Olympic Games make any sense without the gathering of supporters from all around the world? Since the first edition, and I mean the one which took place in Ancient Greece, that is what they are all about. Postpone one more year, or it is going to be pointless
