City of London Police warn students to avoid ’open science’ site Sci-Hub

The City of London Police issued a warning over the weekend against visiting Sci-Hub, a website that offers over 85 million free research papers that are typically behind paywalls. Police said using the ’Russia-based website’ could ’pose a threat’ to students’ personal data. The website says it ’removes all barriers’ to science, and claims that copyright laws should be abolished.

Students directly emailing authors for research, universities dropping astronomically expensive subscriptions to scientific publishers, and most of it available on Sci-Hub for free, and freely given by the authors. I can see why publishers who make a living duping young students out of £35 per manuscript (for research these publishers got for free also, btw) would feel threatened by Sci-Hub. Who knew they’d resort to trying to use the news to scare people though.

In Canada, textbooks are a huge racketeering system for Universities to generate huge profits for them and publishers. A system designed to make money, not value for the student.

Just another example of how free speech is dying in the UK. For more info, see 'Piers Morgan' (and thanks to the left for finally giving me something to agree with him on).

Students who are intelligent enough to recognize the treasure trove of self-improvement that is sci-hub and are in the scientific sector, are also intelligent enough to use a secondary laptop with an enforced Linux/Unix distro where they don't leave or post any personal information and which they can afford to be risky with. City of London Police are not a police for citizens as much as corporate lackeys and a complete joke from what I've heard from many Brits.

Scientific journals are much like newspapers. They can't survive in the digital age.

Yep. The scientific community is a joke in the west.
