Why are mRNA vaccines so exciting?

Why are mRNA vaccines so exciting?

How do they differ from traditional vaccines, and what makes them so exciting? The main goal of a vaccine for a particular infectious agent, such as the virus that causes COVID-19, is to reduce transmission by teaching the immune system what that virus looks like and how it behaves. Once educated, the immune system vigorously attacks the actual virus, if it ever enters the body.

It's a bit early to say they have been so successful. Bear in mind also a huge proportion of vaccinations have been the Oxford Astrazeneca jab, which is a fairly traditional technology, not mRNA.
