Discord set to be acquired for $10 billion by Microsoft

Discord Inc. is set to be acquired by Microsoft according to reports for a sum of over $10 billion USD. Rumors regarding the acquisition of the gaming-focused group-chatting platform rose this week after it was reported that various companies had been approached by the VoIP app in a bid for a buyer. Also, it has been reported that Discord is more likely to go public rather than selling itself.

Great. Teamspeak, ventrilo, now discord will go defunct. Surely you don't expect us to use in-game party chat to raid....

More big tech monopoly. MS bought it up before Facebag did.

Microsoft wasting time and money chasing the wrong market. There is a need for an open public exchange to replace Adsense. Until Microsoft gets into the game it is just a slow-motion death for the company. You can only survive so long cannibalizing your commercial retail customer base before the subscription model runs out of runway. STOP CHASING SUBSCRIPTIONS. Start chasing the digital economy infrastructure. Replace AdSense. Replace Square, Paypal, Mastercard. Enable your customer base to create the replacement for Amazon. What your developer environment needs are a revenue stream for creators and developers that replaces Adsense. It is a Core Component.

All conjecture here, but my guess it that Microsoft is looking for a viable competitor to Slack, which was just bought by Salesforce. Monopoly vs. Monopoly means buying as many innovative small companies as possible so you can force users to buy your full product, or at least force the other monopoly out of business. I hope Discord holds out and goes public ir stays private (which is an option no one talks about in tech. Hm I wonder why /sarcasm). They're the future of community building and staying private would keep them innovative.

Microsoft ruins everything it touches. People will flee Discord and find an alternative.
