New Zealand approves paid leave for miscarriage and stillbirth

New Zealand’s parliament has unanimously approved a bill that gives mothers and their partners three days of bereavement leave after a miscarriage or stillbirth. Ginny Andersen, the Labour member of Parliament who drafted the bill, said she claimed the legislation to be unique in the world. The measure applies to parents and even to couples planning to have a child through adoption or surrogacy.

This is confusing. We have abortion till birth which strips unborn babies of their humanity and now we can take bereavement leave upon their natural death, which affirms their humanity.

I thought it was just a clump of cells?

Do they have paid leave for the bereavement of an older child? Or another family member even? This legislation sounds silly and redundant to me

So many people in the comments who see how well workers in other countries get treated and seem to be in denial. Stop hating because you are treated worse.

I'm kinda happy about this. I think the would-be parents need a little time to grieve and get themselves together before going back to work. At the same time I have a hard time squaring that with their abortion policy. But hey I'm not the smartest guy on here.

How can this be a thing when these same people don't believe it's even a human being yet. Why do they need "bereavement" time to be sad over what they consider just a lump of useless cells.🤷🏾‍♂️

How do you square this with still allowing abortions? If the baby isn't alive until he or she is born then what is there to be bereaved about? You can't have it both ways. The correct answer is yes the unborn baby is alive so still birth is something to mourn and abortion is murder.

Seems odd that so many of these, "well, what about abortion" commenters seem to forget that pro lifers have miscarriages and still births as well... It can be a very traumatic experience, let people grieve, ffs.
