Woman receives new windpipe in pathbreaking transplant surgery

The first complete surgical transplant of a windpipe was performed by a medical team in New York City. Sonia Sein, a 56-year-old woman from the Bronx, New York is the recipient. Following a particularly nasty asthma attack, Sein ended up in the hospital six years ago. Doctors inserted a tube down her throat in order to help her breathe. Trachea transplants have been a big challenge for doctors.

Just wait. This is not the first time this has been tried, and the history is sad reading.
