A number of countries in South America are coping with a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths according to figures released by the health authorities in the continent. Record number of daily deaths were reported by Uruguay and Paraguay while the 13 million mark of total COVID-19 cases was surpassed in Brazil. The Brazilian variant of the virus has been attributed to the latest surge.
