Virginia becomes first southern state to legalize marijuana

Virginia has become the first southern state to legalize marijuana Wednesday, as lawmakers voted to approve Gov. Ralph Northam’s proposed changes to a bill that allows adults to possess and cultivate small amounts of the drug. Northam’s amendments cleared the House 53-44 with two abstentions. It will, however, be years before legal retail sales follow legalized possession.

Just do it federally already. It's no worse than alcohol. Take the taxes and the upturn in snack sales 😀

Like all smoke, pot contains carcinogens. Worst case scenario, it may increase your risk of cancer if you smoke it (still needs more research to prove this). Just tax it like we do tobacco. Use the money for something like funding schools.

This flagrantly political bs law should never been considered a law. Born out of literally nothing other than prejudice and ignorance as well as propagated it for a period of time from WW1 to afganistan combined with a victim tally that more than quadruples all of these little wars as well. Once you add all of the people who have had their lives impacted buy a law that's fundamentally wrong then the atrocities compile. But hey we Americans have a special love for punishing people and if we gotta create a wrong we are certainly well versed at it.

Lets tax, regulate, and educate for ALL drugs. Beginning with weed and psychedelics 🍄

Nice to see another state let go of a bs law that should have never existed in the first place. Hopefully the federal government will let go of this soon.

Maybe I'm missing something, but FL already has.

It's about time. Like others have said - just legalize it federally already. Allow cigarette companies to distribute in 20 packs of joints, just like cigarettes and tax the hell out of it. A pack of joints would easily sell for $75-80, and fat tax revenue could go to something like... oh I don't know... maybe replenishing Social Security, which the federal government has used as a slush fund for decades now. Or it could help to pay down the national debt. Just a thought.

Excuse you, Virginia is no longer a southern state. It has been kicked out of the south for being too yankee...just like Maryland was.

Is Virginia really “southern” anymore? I think they’re culturally and sometimes politically a border state as of right now. Historically, I’d call them southern, but I’m not sure they are still really southern

Its about time! Now stop passing away money on the WOD too.

Legalize it federally already. And don’t use Virginia and South in the same sentence again.

Pot is much less of a "drug" than alcohol is.

There shouldn't be laws on the books for victimless crimes. The term itself is an oxymoron.
