Woman who coughed on shopper gets 30 days in jail

A Florida woman who intentionally coughed on a fellow customer at a store last year in the midst of the COVID pandemic has been sentenced to 30 days in jail. The judge also ordered Debra Hunter to pay a $500 fine, serve six months probation and participate in a mental health evaluation along with anger management. She was also ordered to cover the costs of the victim’s Covid-19 test.

I'm glad this person was forced to face the concequences of their actions. Respect and civility is at a low ebb in society today; immature behavior by grown adults seems to be the new "normal". Or maybe it's always been here and it's just finally being caught on record since cell phone cameras and social media are everywhere? The recent divisions in thinking on issues have really demonstrated how psychologically and emotionally juvenile a lot of the US (and world) population is... Everyone has bad days and acts inappropriately at times. But a lot of people push it way beyond acceptable behavior. Then, so many people compound their mistake by refusing to acknowledge the inappropriateness of their behavior, to take responsibility, to apologize and to make amends / rectify it. The funniest thing to me is when people blame others for their own bad behavior. You can't control other people in this world (beyond the legal realm); all you can control are your own actions and reactions, to some extent. Even on this forum I see a lot of excuses like "well, the (insert group here) do some bad behavior, so I can do it too!" If you're going to behave just as badly as some members of another group do, how are you any better than they are? That's childish. Everyone needs to hold themselves to a higher standard, recognize their mistakes, and try not to repeat them.

The jail term is silly - it simply costs the state a bunch of money and strokes the judge's ego. Why not order community service - perhaps helping out at a hospital or a seniors center?

The worst thing is it seems that Hunter was offered a less severe plea deal with much fewer concequences. I didn't find this info until after my last post but would have been acceptable, IMHO: https://www.firstcoastnews.com/mobile/article/news/crime/woman-seen-on-video-coughing-on-customer-at-pier-1-arraigned-on-assault-charges/77-23ffa017-c63d-4331-b958-d12d0ec1ce3c

That seems a bit excessive. Punishment should fit the crime.

Not saying I agree with her (dont really care i dont cough on ppl) theres no reason she should be made to take classes and have a mental check AND pay a fine AND pay for the persons test. If this kind of punishment continues or gets worse i will no longer have faith in this system and that could lead to future problems

That is classified as assault... in the covid world one could classify it as biological warfare.. (thankfully it never reached that point)
