US considering cash payments to Central America to stem migration

A senior official from the White House reported that the United States is mulling a conditional cash transfer program to help address economic woes that lead migrants from certain Central American countries to trek north. The US is also reportedly mulling sending COVID-19 vaccines to such countries. The potential program would be targeted at people in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Why do people think throwing money at an issue will solve it? Why does the white house think they have a right to give my money to people who ruined their own country and are invading mine?

No amount of money is going to fix the intrinsic problems in these countries.

Or, instead of incentivising Central American countries to create crises or demand more money under threat of sending more migrants. Why not just, I dunno, build a wall and patrol the border. So any migrants that make it there will be stuck in Mexico, so Mexico will stop them entering their country. Then Guatemala will be stuck with them till they stop them entering. Then Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama. They will all prevent hoardes of migrants from crossing into their countries because they know they won't be able to move on to the next and they will be stuck with the crisis.

While I agree that stopping illegal immigration at its source makes a lot of sense, I am skeptical that throwing money at Central American countries ruined by corruption is going to improve the situation.

Oh man. Here we go. May we be amidst a reckoning? If the WH is considering cash payments to migrants, then you know they know the blame is on them. The US Gov't caused the "crisis" at the border, not the other way around. The southern border log-jam is the result of Central American citizens having nowhere else to go. They have nowhere else to go because of US Gov't intervention and policy involvement throughout Central America over the past 50-100 years AND our lack of effort in mitigating the very real effects of climate change. Our society pillaged and impoverished much of Central American society - and we often did it by force. All of Central America should have a thriving tourism industry...but we mostly go to Mexico, or an island. Why is that? Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, these should all be bustling hubs of tourism and humanity. These people were given the gift of lush lands and the most agreeable climate for growing so many exotic things.... The US gov't identified most of the area as a resource for our society and set about dominating and plundering much of it. We made corporate deals with bad actors in the region, and used the US military to enforce corporate interests. Our border crisis is the result of the above. We screwed up the natural evolution of their societies, and ultimately forced the moms and dads and families to leave their home countries just to try to survive....and then #45 calls them all criminals, because he's a willful idiot.

Can we please fix our own issues before sending money to other countries to solve their problems?

This was done for 2 Trillion under the Obama administration and was found to not have worked. Those who built things in Central America were American companies, and all the money sent to the government never went to the people.

Bet yet huge signs all along the border trespassers" WILL BE SHOT". I've seen plenty of these signs on ppl property why not at the border for the invading horde

A double layer of landmines at the border and some peligro signs would be more effective and cheaper.

This is a yet another slap in the face to American citizens. Instead of helping citizens that are struggling, they are gonna send even more money to other countries. Hey Biden!! HELP YOUR OWN CITIZENS FIRST!

Wish y'all would get this mad about the $750 Billion we spend a year blowing up brown people in the middle east.

They're coming here for the massive social welfare programs they'll have access to. This isn't going to do anything other than enrich the cartels.

Where is all this money coming from? The USA owes trillions of dollars. I don't think they're gonna pay. Why would anyone lend the USA money if they are just going to give it away to other countries? The end is coming.

Maybe we should give money to construction companies to finish the wall. Better return on the investment. The wall will not ask for more.

Bullets are cheaper. Also we could make being illegally in the country punishable by 10 years of indentured servitude and sell the labor internationally. I doubt many migrants would want to be forced to do construction work in Dubai without pay...

I just had a great idea, instead of sending money to corrupt governments and cartels in central America, why not use that money to build a wall?

we are not providers for the world. thay should be done through charitable donations through free will. it should not be forced through taxes. just secure the border and tell them, if you come, you will be sent back. the only exception will be for those who have provable persecution issues in their home land.

Economists have said many times over that it would be cheaper and better in the long run to help these developing countries by helping their government build better infrastructure and help them take care of their own in Their own nations where they share a common culture and identity. Seems the establishment know this yet keep encouraging mass migration of unskilled people from these countries, must be some reason they do this that they don’t want us to know 🤔
