House approves stopgap government spending bill

Congress on Thursday approved a two-week stopgap spending bill to avert a government shutdown, and set the stage for confrontation with President Trump. The bill extends funding through December 21 but before it expires Congress will consider a bill to confirm spending for the next fiscal year. Trump has demanded $5 billion in funding for his border wall project, but Democrats oppose the idea.
