Trump temporarily ending shutdown, but border wall fight isn’t over

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he would declare a national emergency if he doesn’t eventually reach a deal with Democrats on border security. Earlier Friday, Trump specified that he would reopen the government for three weeks to give negotiators more time to work out a border security compromise.

This three week bridge deal is about PR. It reveals Pelosi's grotesque character, as she refused all of Trump's proposed compromises to reopen the government, while Trump comes out of it looking good by putting the immediate needs of federal workers ahead of his long-term agenda. Now, when Pelosi persists in her obviously unprincipled obstinance and forces another government shutdown in mid February, she will look even worse, and the American people will be fed up with her petty obstructionism. The media, of course, will tell a different story, lauding Pelosi's "conviction" and mocking Trump for "caving", which will of course only further reveal them as the partisan hacks and liars we all know they are.

Trump needs to pull the trigger on the emergency declaration. He has waited long enough and given Democrats enough chances to side with Americans.

Negotiation only works when both parties will sit at the table and talk Pelosi is clearly incapable of this, as her goal is to take promise of the wall from Trump. She doesn’t care about the American people, security, or the will of the people. She only cares about image and slandering Trump

People who want Trump to use emergency powers to build the wall need to keep two things in mind: 1. If Trump does this without consequence he will have dramatically widened the scope for emergency powers to be used. Do you want the next Democrat President to use this precedent to ram through their agenda? 2. You can’t claim to care about the Constitution if you don’t object to this use of emergency powers.

The only thing that will happen when he declares a national emergency is that it will go to court in which it will just get held up for years. Sad. He should have done this when he had the house, but what do I know.

That will be tied up in the courts, with the results being Trump losing again. He wants 200 miles of strategically placed barrier, based on the cost of the recent 700 miles of fencing that's $8 million a mile, which mean Trumps 200 miles of barrier should come in at $1.6 billion.

That was not giving ground. THAT was giving up.

He keeps threatening a national emergency, which means he won't do it. Trump, being impulsive as he is, would just do it if he meant to. He's just playing chicken right now and hoping the Dems bail first, all while holding federal workers who live paycheck-to-paycheck out of necessity hostage over a fake, inflated crisis. The Democrats are constantly looking to compromise and move the Overton window to the right, and Trumps own people just tell furloughed workers and fired contractors to "take out a loan" on things like rent and necessities without caring about the interest. Both sides are incompetent.

It is a truly weird thing to see the believers on both sides state there reasoning for their political sides. From my perspective, I just see politicians doing politics, and Trump trying something new that until now didn’t work. I think there are much bigger issues then illegal immigrants passing the sudden border. Or drugs and violence from Mexicans. It is a decoy. The wall. The real problems are just not that easy to fix, you can’t make a slogan for them.
