US envoy briefs Afghan President on talks with the Taliban

The US peace envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, has shared details of his latest round of talks with the Taliban in Qatar with the Afghan president. Khalilzad is reported having said that he had discussed a cease-fire deal with the Taliban but there was no progress so far on the issue. The President’s office said that the Taliban demanded the withdrawal of all foreign troops from the country.

So basically we learned nothing from Vietnam. Despite a wealth of COIN knowledge from Vietnam, Rhodesia, Algeria, etc. we're still repeating history. Westerners can't create a liberal democracy without incentivizing a grassroots transformation. Our idiotic rupes of engagement didn't help either.
