Jeff Flake rules out 2020 primary challenge to Trump

Former Sen. Jeff Flake announced Tuesday that he would not run for the White House in 2020. Flake, a frequent critic of President Trump, said he hoped that there would be a Republican who challenges the president in the primary. Flake added that he was joining CBS News as a contributor.

Flake is just setting up his 2024 run. He knows that opposing Trump would alienate half his base. This has been in the works since he first publicly challenged Trump's policies. If he works in media, he's got a platform to criticize Trump without any real consequences. Then, he could run as a 'reasonable' conservative after Trump finishes his second term; capitalizing on the successes, while maintaining a safe distance from any failures.
