Australia records hottest month ever

Australia recorded its hottest month on record in January, the country’s weather bureau said on Friday. The mean temperature for January across the country exceeded 30 degrees Celsius, with some areas seeing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for several days straight. The weather bureau said hot, dry weather is expected to persist till April.

Two weeks ago in my town we had temps of 42, 42, 43, 45 & 47 (that is 116 for Americans on the old scale). It was insane. I hate Victorian summers!

"with some areas seeing 40c for several days straight". I remember living in South Australia in 2000 and we had 46c for just over 5 days straight. It's not uncommon for that to happen in the country. Where I am in Newcastle it's been fine around 33 consistently but up the valley (around 20kms inland) it's about 10c hotter than the coast. Usually due to westerlies. Nothing out of the ordinary for here.
